# Manage the Message Library

Use the Message Library when you want journey messages to start from reusable source templates. A source template keeps common copy in one place so teams do not have to rewrite the same welcome, reminder, thank-you, or handoff message in every journey.

## How source templates work

Source templates are shared starting points for journey message steps.

When a step uses a source template without an override, edits to the source copy can affect journey steps that still use that shared source. When one journey needs different copy, override the message inside that step instead of changing the shared source for everyone.

Message Library templates can be filtered by email or SMS when SMS is supported for your account. The preview context lets you switch between Donors, Trip Participants, and Recipients so your team can check merge tags against the right kind of record.

{% hint style="info" %}
SMS templates and SMS message steps only appear when SMS is available for your account. For one-to-one donor replies and Sendblue setup, see [SMS Messaging](/guides/core-features/communication-tools/sms-messaging.md).
{% endhint %}

## Provision the starter library

Use **Provision starter library** when the account does not yet have the default Journeys source templates.

Provisioning creates reusable starter templates for common journey messages. You can still create templates manually, but provisioning gives your team a faster starting point for common journeys.

## Create an email source template

1. Open **Automations**.
2. Choose **Journeys**.
3. Open **Message Library**.
4. Select **Create email template**.
5. Add the label, subject, and body.
6. Use the preview context to check merge tags.
7. Save the source template.

Use labels that describe the job of the message, such as "First gift welcome" or "Payment recovery reminder." Clear labels make the template easier to choose inside the journey builder.

## Create an SMS source template

If SMS is available, use **Create SMS** to add reusable text-message copy.

SMS templates use one message body. Keep the copy short, direct, and specific to the action the donor or participant should take.

## Edit a source template

Use **Edit** on a source template when the reusable message itself should change.

Before saving, consider whether the change should apply anywhere the source is used. If the change is only for one journey step, edit that step and override the copy there instead.

## Use a source template in a journey

1. Open the journey draft.
2. Add or select a **Send message** step.
3. Choose Email or SMS when both are available.
4. Select the source template.
5. Preview the message.
6. Add an override only when this step needs different copy.

After the message step is configured, review the publish checklist before publishing the journey.
